WSET Level 2 Week One

Week One

I survived my first week of the WSET Level 2 Course! So far, so good! I have been feeling excited yet a bit nervous to be a formal student once again, but after this week I feel really confident in this process!

I received a few materials before my first class: textbook, workbook, charts with proper tasting notes, access to online materials through a classroom portal, and a tasting kit. The WSET program sent me a Wine Tasting Kit that includes 12 small 100ml bottles of select varietals. Just enough for a good taste.

The coursework assignments were straight forward, there are short quizzes to measure my reading comprehension, and my first interactive webinar class had visual aids and virtual polling tools. All this material made each step manageable and not overwhelming.. which I was a little fearful of.

This first week has been an introduction. We learned how to take proper tasting notes, use the tasting lingo, and started studying both Cabernet and Chardonnay regions.

For my first LIVE webinar with my online class, we dived into our personalized tasting kit and evaluated two wines together. For week 1 we started with a Chablis and a Cabernet. It is very different drinking wine and dissecting the aromas and notes in a more systematic way than I have ever before. It’s opening up a new perspective for me! Week two here I come!

-Tasting Wine-

  1. First, ensure your wines are at proper serving temperature and your glasses are clean
  2. Pick a well lit area. Pour and start your tasting from the lightest wine to the darkest wine
  3. Have a notebook ready to record your tasting notes
  4. Smell, swirl, smell, taste, evaluate, and enjoy!
